Chichester 950 – Chichester Cathedral – 24th – 31st October 2025
The experience illuminated the Cathedral’s iconic architecture and featured thousands of images from our archive, weaving together centuries of history into a stunning display that honours the Cathedral’s rich heritage while celebrating its vibrant role in the present day.
Chichester Cathedral became the canvas for a completely bespoke artwork as Luxmuralis brought the Chichester950 Light Experience to life. Commissioned especially for our 950th anniversary, this ambitious installation of light and sound led audiences on a journey through nine centuries of history – but not in the way you might have expected
Luxmuralis approached the Cathedral as if it were a vast, intricate map. Using plans, textures, manuscripts, stained glass and architectural drawings from the Cathedral and the West Sussex Archives, they plotted a course through our ancient building that is abstract, imaginative, and deeply evocative.
Visitors encountered five distinct installations across the Cathedral, each designed to transform the familiar into the extraordinary. Stained-glass windows were animated with colour and movement;
architectural plans evolved and merged; manuscripts unfurled across stone surfaces. The journey
culminated in the nave, where columns and walls were flooded with floor-to-ceiling shifting imagery
and light, accompanied by a specially composed soundtrack.
