Scriptorium: The Illuminated Histories – Rochester Cathedral 1st – 5th October 2024

This brand new artwork incorporated iconic images including many from the British Library and the collections of Rochester Cathedral, bringing to life the rich tapestry of Anglo-Saxon artifacts and medieval manuscripts in a spectacle that promised to captivate the senses and ignite the imagination.

The show, created by award winning artistic collaboration ‘Luxmuralis’, Peter Walker Sculptor and David Harper Composer, is the fourth time Luxmuralis have been at Rochester Cathedral with tickets for previous shows selling quickly and many days selling out.

Drawing inspiration from the illuminated manuscripts of the Anglo-Saxon era, “Scriptorium” transports viewers into a world of timeless beauty and enchantment. Intricately crafted pages comes to life in vivid detail, as dynamic projections illuminate nearly every part of Rochester Cathedral with a symphony of colour, light, and sound. From breathtaking depictions of biblical scenes to intricate Anglo Saxon motifs, dragons, knights and beasts will fill every inch of the Cathedral as it is adorned with the luminous glow of history. 

However “Scriptorium” is more than just a visual feast, it is a multi-sensory experience unlike any other. As visitors wandered through the cathedral, they were enveloped in a symphony of soundscapes that complemented and enhanced the visual spectacle unfolding before them. From haunting chants to stirring melodies, the music served as a poignant backdrop to the timeless narratives woven throughout the illuminated manuscripts.

What set “Scriptorium” apart was its sheer scale and ambition, with nearly every inch of the Cathedral adorned with light and sound. From the soaring heights of the nave to the intimate architecture around the interior of the Cathedral, “Scriptorium” invited viewers to explore every facet of Rochester Cathedral in a way they have never experienced before.

As Luxmuralis premieres “Scriptorium: The Illuminated Histories” at Rochester Cathedral, audiences were invited to immerse themselves in a unique and unforgettable experience that celebrated the beauty of the past while igniting hope for the future.
